1: God’s glory is my highest aim
The greatest purpose of your life and ministry is to bring glory to God. You will be tempted to glorify yourself. You will be tempted to receive glory others want to give you, but all glory must be deflected to God. He’s the One who called you, saved you, and is sanctifying you. He is your life, your hope, and your eternity. He’s the One who woke you up this morning, put breath in your lungs, and gave you the opportunity to serve Him. Give him the glory he deserves.
Ephesians 3:21,” to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”
1 Corinthians 10:31, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
2: Relentlessly seek the Lord
Let’s be honest. You don’t know what to do and you need God’s help.
2 Chronicles 20:12, “…We do not know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”
John 15:5, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
How much better, God-glorifying, and anxiety-reducing would ministry be, if I would stop trying to manage everything and instead admit that if anything good happens, it will come from the Lord?
3: When God gets my heart, he gets everything
There’s nothing more important than the condition of your heart before God.
Matthew 12:34, “Out of the overflow of your heart, your mouth speaks.”
Matthew 6:21, “Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
Proverbs 4:23, “Keep your heart with all vigilance for from it flow the springs of life.”
Even good things can be sinfully idolized. Ministry can become an idol. Examine your heart frequently. Enough said.
4. It’s not about you.
Until His glory is our purpose, until His will is our desire, until all we want is what He wants it will cost too much. It will be too hard. It will cut too deep.” ~ Glorious Surrender
It’s hard to remember this when your entire life revolves around ministry. But, it is the truth. Ministry is not about you. Not even close. It’s not about your husband or your church. It’s not about your community or what you have to offer the Lord. This life, ministry, trial, and joy – it’s about God and His glory.
You are not the main character. You are not the hero. You are, in some ways, hardly a footnote on the bottom of the page that is your life. God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit wove your life into their human story. You have a role that matters, but it’s not about you. It’s about God.
