Over three years ago, I declared a fast on TV watching. Frankly, I got tired of the constant stream of bad news, the cynicism, the hateful political rhetoric, the poor choice of humor and the bullying. “Is this really news?” I often asked myself. “Real news?”
I read recently that in the 1800’s, the first newspapers were only published twice a month because there was nothing of public interest to report. All that was drastically changed.
We are told that bad news sells. And maybe this constant flow of toxic language and bleakness brings up ratings. I don’t know.
I have seriously reflected on what all this negative intake does to the soul? I don’t just mean the soul of an individual but also the soul of a nation.
In the West we have long left our Christian roots and that has opened the door to thinking that political solutions will solve our problems. Yet, time and time again, as a nation, we are disappointed, frustrated, and disillusioned because the promises given in a campaign never come to pass. The political messiah we are looking for never materializes. The truth is: our problems are fundamentally spiritual and not political.
When you leave God out, you feed on the plastic fruit of secularism and it’s only a matter of time until there is wide-spread disillusionment and mistrust. Dreams die and life loses its meaning and purpose. If there is no hope for the future, there will be no anticipation to face it. The loss of hope imprisons the soul and feeds discouragement and despair. Suicides are common today and particularly with youth. Where is hope?
An infusion of hope is needed now in the West! Not from a political figure but from everyday people who want God, and who are desperate to know Him.
Paul in Romans 15:3 identifies God as the Source of Hope!
Now the God of Hope will you fill you with all joy and peace in believing that you may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
This powerful verse clearly states:
- We serve a God of Hope. Not a God of despair, but hope. Not a God of disillusionment but rock-solid, life-transforming hope!
- Hope is like a powerful fountainhead that can more than fill us with joy and peace.
- We can abound in hope – overflow with it – through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Hope has been called the oxygen of the soul, making our spiritual immune system healthy! Hope is as vital to our lives as the very oxygen we breathe. Physically we breathe in oxygen. Spiritually we breathe in hope! If we are filled with hope, we are filled with faith! If we are filled with hope and faith, we abound in joy and peace – regardless of the news!
Today, women who love Jesus and are in leadership, as mentors and leaders, we need first, to take care of our own souls. Intentional soul care is absolutely vital today. Feed your soul on God’s Word, mediation, memorization of scripture, prayer, journaling and daily worship. To be filled with hope and abound in it, can only come one way and that is by cultivating your soul’s need for God, His Word, His presence. We were made by God and for God. And as Church Father, Augustine said: “Our hearts are restless till they find rest in Thee.”
Second, we need to be hope-givers. Hope-encouragers. Lift the banner. Sound the message! Our message is Jesus who came that we might have life and have it abundantly. Hope has been defined as: ‘the confident expectation of the goodness of God.” And that’s our message: “Hope in Jesus. Hope in the greatness and goodness of God.”
Hope stirs faith the way the sight of the finish line stirs a runner. It gives energy, vitality and confidence in a God who is bigger, more than able, more than good and powerfully in control.
Can a spiritual rebirth come through a messenger of hope? Absolutely!
Now is the time!
Sound the message of Hope! Be a hope-giver!
