Embracing Change

Susan Chan

About ten years ago, I faced the challenge of moving to a new neighbourhood after living in the same place for thirty years. It was an emotionally tough decision, as I had to leave behind cherished memories and established friendships. However, by choosing to trust God and embrace this change, I discovered unexpected blessings. In my new community, I met wonderful new people and found fellowship in a church where I could grow spiritually, serve and contribute to the community. Looking back, I realize that although the change was initially uncomfortable, it ultimately deepened my relationship with God and strengthened my sense of community.

In life, we all must deal with change. While it can be exciting, it can also be painful and even frightening. For Christians, change is more than just something to endure; it presents an opportunity for growth, a way to strengthen our relationship with God and develop our character. "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance." (James 1:2-3)

Christians are called to continually grow in faith and character. The Bible encourages us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds (Romans 12:2). This transformation cannot happen without change. Whether responding to new circumstances, overcoming challenges, or stepping outside our comfort zones, change is essential for our spiritual growth.

Throughout the Bible, many individuals embraced change and experienced remarkable personal growth as a result. These stories remind us that when we trust God during times of transition, He leads us to greater things.

A powerful example of embracing change is Abraham. In Genesis 12:1, God called Abraham to leave everything familiar—his home, his people, and his country—and journey to a land that God would show him. Despite not knowing where he was headed, Abraham believed God and obeyed. This step of faith was crucial for his development. His willingness to embrace the unknown allowed God to fulfil His promise of making Abraham the father of many nations. Abraham's story teaches us that trusting God through life's changes can lead to blessings beyond our imagination.

Although change can be challenging in our own lives, it is necessary for our personal development. Changes such as starting a new job, moving to a different city, or experiencing shifts in relationships provide opportunities to trust God more deeply and grow as individuals.

Changing our perspective can help us embrace change positively. Instead of worrying about the future, we can view change as an opportunity for God to work in new and exciting ways. Knowing that He has a purpose for everything, we can navigate change with confidence by following His guidance and remaining open to His leading. "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11)

While change is an inevitable part of life, for Christians, it serves as a tool used by God to help us become the people He intended us to be. When we embrace change with faith and trust in God, we allow Him to work in our lives, fostering spiritual growth and closer ties with Him.
