Unleashing Divine Strength: Realizing Our Potential Through Christ
Written by Dr. Susan Chan Lee
We often reflect on Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me," as a powerful reminder that God's strength enables us to transcend our human limitations. This verse isn't a boast of invincibility, but a declaration of faith in the boundless power available through a relationship with Jesus Christ. It speaks to spiritual resilience, achieved not through our own might, but through reliance on Christ Jesus’s strength.
Called to a Vision
In 2024, I felt an undeniable call to organize a conference for the women of Asia, despite facing what seemed like insurmountable challenges. I had never organized an international conference before, and I needed to gather a planning team of women from different countries, most of whom I had never met. To top it off, I had no financial resources to depend on. Yet, deep in my heart, I knew this was God's project. Months earlier, He had given me a vivid vision of women in their national costumes coming together under a tree laden with fruits of different shapes, sizes, and colours, worshiping, praying, and studying God’s Word in unity. This image fuelled my faith and determination to see this vision happen, not in my own strength but by the power of the Holy Spirit. Seeking His leading and direction at each step, I moved forward in faith.
Amazingly, the planning unfolded beautifully. Resources flowed in miraculously, and we not only met all our expenses but were also able to sponsor participants from poorer nations to attend the conference. This was a testament to Ephesians 3:20, which states God can do "immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine."
Empowered Through Struggles
Another episode in my story that illustrates God’s enabling power is my pursuit of a doctoral degree later in life. Faced with the challenges of age, health issues, family responsibilities, and a personal tragedy, I felt overwhelmed. At one point, I almost wanted to give up and quit pursuing my dream of a doctorate degree. Yet, through the struggles of academia and research frustrations, the Holy Spirit empowered me with wisdom and perseverance to successfully complete my Doctorate in Ministry within the stipulated time frame.
Biblical Examples of Achieving the Impossible
Throughout the Bible, numerous individuals achieved the impossible with God's help. Their stories echo the sentiment found in Psalm 18:29, "With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall."
Consider Moses, who led the Israelites out of Egypt and across the Red Sea, overcoming immense obstacles and fear. God empowered him to confront Pharaoh and perform miracles, showcasing His power (Exodus 14:21-22).
Joseph, betrayed by his brothers and sold into slavery, remained faithful to God. His perseverance led him to become second-in-command in Egypt, where he saved many lives during a famine (Genesis 50:20).
Esther risked her life by approaching King Xerxes without an invitation, to save her people from genocide. Her courage and faith resulted in the deliverance of the Jews (Esther 4:14).
David faced Goliath with faith in God and defeated a giant that seemed insurmountable (1 Samuel 17). Despite threats from King Saul and personal failures, David relied on God, ultimately becoming a revered king. His journey illustrates that God can transform adversity into opportunity.
These examples remind us that with God's assistance, we can overcome seemingly insurmountable challenges. As Isaiah 40:31 states, "those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint."
Visions into Realities
We can achieve the impossible because we serve a God who specializes in making the impossible possible! He turns visions into realities, reminding us, as Zechariah 4:6 states, "‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty."
Prayer: Gracious Father, thank You for the strength You provide through Christ. I ask for courage and unwavering faith as I strive to accomplish more for Your kingdom. Help me to step out boldly in faith, trusting that You equip me for every good work. May I be a vessel of Your love and grace, impacting those around me for Your glory. Empower me to face challenges with confidence, knowing that I can do all things through You who strengthens me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
